July 6, 2007, Newsletter Issue #145: Pilates Is Yoga's Younger Relative

Tip of the Week

Gaiam Tip: Some people refer to “yoga pilates” as a single exercise, but they are two distinct exercise programs. Pilates was developed in the 1920s by Joseph Pilates as a way to build strength and prevent injuries, while yoga is a traditional activity dating back thousands of years.

Yoga and Pilates are similar in many respects. Both exercises focus on using the body’s own weight to build strength, and both require concentration to make progress. Pilates offers many of the same movements as yoga without the Sanskrit terminology, chanting, or meditative aspects of yoga, which appeals to some people who simply want a workout. In addition, the body-sculpting reputation of Pilates and its popularity among celebrities looking to slim down has increased its popularity.
