May 18, 2007, Newsletter Issue #138: Place Your Gear Outside Of The Yoga Space

Tip of the Week

Gaiam Tip: Whether you attend yoga class in a yoga studio or in a gym, respect the yoga space by placing your shoes, socks, bags, and jackets in lockers if possible, or off to the side on the edges of the class space. Keeping your personal things away from the class space not only cuts down on the things you have to distract you, but it reduces the risk that someone will trip over an errant shoe or purse strap while jumping or stepping back into a pose.

Most yoga instructors will ask a class to align their mats in a certain way or stagger them so that participants won’t bump into each other while extending their arms for triangle poses or wide-legged forward bends. Keeping your personal items off the floor allows for the safest and most effective use of space.

And turn off your cell phone, pager, or any other device that may make noise and cause a distraction.
