Two Concepts To Know Before You Start Your Yoga Class

When you attend yoga classes, or are practicing yoga at home in your own personal yoga class, remember these two key concepts (one physical and one mental) to help you get more out of any class:

Core Concept: Pull your belly in. During any yoga class, try to use part of your mind to concentrate on pulling your belly button towards the back of your spine. Most teachers will remind students to pull the belly in during different poses, but remind yourself to do it when you start to get tired a certain posture. Not only will it distract you from your hard-working arms and legs, but also pulling your belly in can help you get deeper into a pose. And developing strong core muscles contributes to better posture and overall fitness, not only for yoga but also for the activities of daily life.

Mental Exercise: Focus on the class. Yoga is about focusing inward. Focusing can be tough when the class is crowded or if there is noise from elsewhere in the gym, but instead of complaining, use any distracting noises as challenges to improve your focus. Recognize the distractions and block them out. Listen to the instructor and focus on his or her voice and directions to help block out other sounds. And don’t look at your neighbors. It’s tempting to look around at what others in the class are doing, but focus on where you are in a pose. If you feel that you are losing your focus, think about your breathing, and breathe deeply and evenly to restore your concentration.

Yoga Class Etiquette

Whether you attend yoga class in a yoga studio or in a gym, respect these basic points of yoga etiquette to make the class more pleasant for everyone:

-Respect the yoga space. Place your shoes, socks, bags, and other clothing in lockers if possible, or off to the side on the edges of the class space. Keeping your personal things away from the class space not only cuts down on the things you have to distract you, but it reduces the risk that someone will trip over an errant shoe or purse strap while jumping or stepping back into a pose.

-Follow directions. It almost goes without saying, but each instructor is different. Follow your instructors’ preferences for how he or she wants to align the mats or stagger them so participants won’t bump into each other.

-Don’t chat. Once the yoga class begins, don’t chat with your neighbors. There will be time to socialize when the class is over.

-Turn off your personal electronics. That means turn off your cell phone, pager, or any other device that may make noise and cause a distraction during your class.

-Be sensible about scents. Be kind to your classmates and avoid wearing heavy fragrances such as perfumes or aftershaves to a yoga class.

Make Yoga Class Part of Your Total Fitness Plan

One of the most important yoga lessons to remember when selecting a yoga class is that not all classes offered at gyms or yoga studios fit into one of the neat boxes of types of yoga such as Ashtanga or Iyengar. Some teachers of Ashtanga may occasionally use props in their yoga sessions, which are common in alignment-focused Iyengar practices.

There is no reason to limit yourself to only one type of class. You start the week with an Iyengar class to work out any kinks you may have acquired over the weekend and take a Power Yoga class for an intense, stress-busting, mid-week workout.

If you are looking for a specific type of class, ask whether the teacher is certified in that specific style of yoga. If you want to practice a certain type of yoga and there is not a class available at a yoga studio near you, check out the wide selection of yoga DVDs and videos, such as Gaiam’s Flexibility Yoga DVD featuring renown instructor Patricia Walden.

You can easily combine classes at a yoga studio with yoga practice at home. And you can mix up your fitness routine with yoga classes and fitness DVDs, such as Gaiam’s Weight Loss DVD set, which includes Pilates, balance ball, and cardio exercises that complement yoga sessions as part of an overall fitness plan.
