There are both differences and similarities between Yoga and Pilates. The biggest difference is that Pilates uses a line of equipment that does not exist in yoga. But the theory of mind-body connection exists in both Yoga and Pilates. They also share a fluidity of movement.
Yoga is defined in the American Heritage College Dictionary as “1. A Hindu discipline aimed at training the consciousness for a state of perfect spiritual insight and tranquility. 2. A system of exercises practiced as part of this discipline to promote control of the body and mind.”
What's important to note is that yoga in NOT defined as a religion or lifestyle. It is a union between body and mind, which is beneficial to physical and mental health.
People are often confused by the different names used in yoga.
What's the difference between poses or postures or asanas? How is Mountain Pose different from Tadasana?
Well, there really isn't any difference. And Mountain Pose and Tadasana are the same posture. You'll find much of it is just preference.
Often instructors will use both the traditional Indian name as well as the more common English name to help students learn both.
