Can I combine yoga with other workouts?

Make Yoga Class Part of Your Total Fitness Plan

One of the most important yoga lessons to remember when selecting a yoga class is that not all classes offered at gyms or yoga studios fit into one of the neat boxes of types of yoga such as Ashtanga or Iyengar. Some teachers of Ashtanga may occasionally use props in their yoga sessions, which are common in alignment-focused Iyengar practices.

There is no reason to limit yourself to only one type of class. You start the week with an Iyengar class to work out any kinks you may have acquired over the weekend and take a Power Yoga class for an intense, stress-busting, mid-week workout.

If you are looking for a specific type of class, ask whether the teacher is certified in that specific style of yoga. If you want to practice a certain type of yoga and there is not a class available at a yoga studio near you, check out the wide selection of yoga DVDs and videos, such as Gaiam's Flexibility Yoga DVD featuring renown instructor Patricia Walden.

You can easily combine classes at a yoga studio with yoga practice at home. And you can mix up your fitness routine with yoga classes and fitness DVDs, such as Gaiam's Weight Loss DVD set, which includes Pilates, balance ball, and cardio exercises that complement yoga sessions as part of an overall fitness plan.
